The Verkhovna Rada has increased the fines for drivers. How will drunk driving be punished?

The penalties for drunk driving and speeding have always been insufficient. The frequency of such cases in Ukraine is very high. It is why people regularly die and break their fortunes. What will change with the new law and will it help to overcome drunk driving?

New fines for traffic violations

For example, the new law provides for a punishment of 17 000 hryvnia for the first case of driving while intoxicated. Previously, there were only 10 000. It increased by 70%.

For the second case of drunk driving during the year, a fine of 34 thousand hryvnia is provided. This amount is almost one and a half times more than it was before. If a person commits such an offense for the third time in a year, then imprisonment for up to ten years is already possible. The car is confiscated also. The new law on punishment for violation of traffic rules introduces the concept of administrative arrest for 15 days. Moreover, this sanction can be applied to drunk drivers. The criminal liability for violation of traffic rules in a state of alcoholic intoxication increases, if this entailed serious consequences.

The protocol part is also changing. Police officers have the ability to add video footage now. It will increase the likelihood of a prosecution being proven in a court.

How much are the fines increasing?

Previously, if a road user exceeded the speed by more than fifty kilometers per hour, a fine of UAH 510 was imposed. Now it has been increased more than threefold – up to 1 700 hryvnia.

Before voting for this law, if someone left the scene of an accident, he risked receiving only a meager fine of 255 hryvnia. Now this amount has been increased to 3400 hryvnia. In addition, the future driver should be deprived of the right to drive a vehicle for one to two years.

There is another wrong habit of our people – to transfer control of a car to a person who does not have such a right. They were punished 510 hryvnia earlier for this. Now the amount has grown to 3400 hryvnia. If this is repeated within a year, then a fine of 40,800 hryvnia is imposed, and also leads to the deprivation of the right to drive a car for a period of five to seven years. Also, quite often, citizens who were deprived of their right to drive a car continued to use it. If a policeman noticed this, a fine of 510 hryvnia was imposed. Now this amount has been increased to UAH 20 400. And if this violation is repeated within a year, the amount of the fine is doubled.
